To give you all a little background, we are a family of 40k players. We recently moved to Jefferson City, Missouri, where there are 0 tabletop game stores, so have built a table in the basement for our gaming enjoyment.
We currently own 4 armies:
5k points of Blood Angels (Mike - dad)
3k points of Dark Angels (Cassie - mom)
4k points of Space Wolves (Nancy - daughter)
4k points of Imperial/Crimson Fists (Gerrit - son).
I do have a brother that I am teaching to play, but I just decided tonight to get in a game with my son (who is 8) and throw together a little battle report.

Drop pod tactical squad to within 3 inches of Objective 2, securing it. No enemy units, end of turn.

Gerrit's vp denied by drop podding BA tactical squad. Mike killed 5 crimson fist tactical marines, but failed to kill a character.

Massed combiplasma destroyed Mike's drop pod, leaving objective #2 uncontested. +1 VP Objective, +1 vp for destroying drop pod.

Good reserve rolls brought in 2 x assault squads, landing close to objective 3.
Both assault squads ran to get into better position.

Gerrit last drop pod squad comes in, taking objective 2 +1 VP
Sporadic fire at the assault squad, but feel no pain reduces lost models to 2.

Mike's last tactical squad comes in. Shoot at tactical squad holding Objective 2. Massed flamer and bolter hits reduce the squad but they hold.
Bolt pistol shots from assault squad 1 reduces if vet squad to 3, who fail leadership and make a tactical withdrawal.
Assault squad 2 hits the CF drop pod in assault and only lands a single hull point.

Mike no prisoners 3 or more destroyed enemy units is d3 vp.

Gerrit objective 13 hold objective 2 +1 vp
Gerrit squads poured fire into the assault squads and killed 2 total models.
Mike Turn 4
Mike threw assault squad one at commander and vet squad, bringing 0 down with shooting.
Assault squad 2 shot IF vet squad and reduced to one model.
Assault squad 1 assaulted CF vets and commander, reducing vets to 2 models and the commander. CF commander dropped 2 assault marines.
Assault squad 2 disorder charges IF vets and razorback. Crack grenades and thunder hammer fail to do anything. Last IF vet falls to other half of assault squad. +1 VP
